Today in memorable opening paragraphs

“Antelopes have 10X vision, you said. It was the beginning or close to it. That means that on a clear night they can see the rings of Saturn.”

Dept. of Speculation, Jenny Offill

This is a hard one because it’s only really memorable in the context of everything that follows. The “10X” stops the eye. It could be the first time anyone has put antelopes and Saturn in the same paragraph and on first glance who knows if it’s even successful. But this novel is such an intimate portrait, so minute a study, that in context it is perfect. Except instead of looking out to the stars, the novel is looking inwards, at microscopic shards of memory and at the most domestic concerns.
