It’s becoming that time of year here in Perth. The sun is staying with us for longer, the sky is the most brilliant blue you can imagine. It’s time for the readers to come out to play. This approaching-spring-time weather is perfect for long afternoons in the park, or Sundays in the back yard with a cat and a novel. It’s also the perfect time for the outdoor book stalls, open air markets and secondhand foraging.
Sadly, I think Town of Vincent peaked too early with this book swap bench I spied in Mount Lawley the other night. Stacks of old library books were left sodden in the drizzle while the bookmarks announced the Mary Street trial would close on August 8. Which is a shame, if it had run just a week longer it would have been a good reason for me to wander across town & donate some novels.
I love the idea of free book shelves and swap-a-book, open air libraries. I’ve often considered what it would take to start one in my ‘hood. Does anyone have any experience like that? Where would you start?
